About Time Zones

A time zone is a region on Earth that uses a uniform time, often based on country boundaries. The reference point for time zones is Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), a time standard based on highly precise atomic clocks. Most time zones are offset from UTC by a whole number of hours (e.g., UTC-5, UTC+8), though some have 30 or 45-minute offsets.

U.S. Time Zones

The contiguous United States is covered by four primary time zones:

  • Eastern Time (ET): UTC-5
  • Central Time (CT): UTC-6
  • Mountain Time (MT): UTC-7
  • Pacific Time (PT): UTC-8

Other zones like Alaska Time (UTC-9) and Hawaii-Aleutian Time (UTC-10) cover the rest of the U.S. states and territories.

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Commonly used in North America and Europe, DST involves advancing clocks by one hour during the summer months to make better use of natural daylight. This calculator does not account for local DST rules, so please be mindful of this when converting times for regions that observe it.
